This is a delightful and rather unusual wooden sewing companion, most likely dating from the late Victorian to early 20th century (c. 1880–1920).
It combines a needle case with what appears to be a ring-style needle holder or emery attachment.
The tapered end unscrews to reveal a bundle of hand sewing needles stored safely inside the handle.
The opposite end has a series of turned wooden discs mounted on a central spindle. This section is fixed into the body and was intended as a sewing aid rather than simply decoration.
The fact that the original needles are still inside the case is a real bonus. These tiny contents were often lost over the decades, so surviving examples with their original needle bundle are noticeably more desirable.
The wood appears to be beech or fruitwood, both commonly used for sewing tools because they turned well on a lathe and developed a lovely honey-coloured patina with age. The smooth finish and elegant turning suggest it was made by a specialist workshop rather than as a homemade piece.
