A set of 3 matching linen napkins with exquisite appliqué embroidery, almost certainly made in France between 1920 and 1945. 

They reflect the elegant table linens that were popular during the Art Deco and early post-Art Deco periods, when simple, refined decoration was favoured over heavily embroidered Victorian styles.

They each measure 30x30cm 

This type of work required considerable precision, as the appliqué had to be carefully cut before being stitched securely in place.

These napkins showcase a sophisticated combination of techniques:

• White linen ground, woven from fine flax fibres.

• Appliqué work, where separate pieces of linen have been cut, shaped and stitched onto the base fabric.

• Satin stitching around every edge, securing the appliqué while creating the raised, sculptural outline.

• Cutwork bridges, which open small spaces around the leaves and flower, adding lightness to the design.

• A neatly scalloped edge, finished with dense satin stitches to prevent fraying.
