This is a lovely, long length which measures 400 x 8cm of machine-made cotton crochet lace edging, most likely made in France between 1920 and 1950. Its rich crimson colour makes it rather unusual, as most surviving examples are white, cream, or ecru.

The colour appears remarkably even, suggesting it was factory-dyed rather than hand-dyed later.

This is a crocheted insertion and edging lace. It was produced using fine mercerised cotton thread, giving it a soft sheen that was fashionable during the first half of the twentieth century.

The lace features three distinct sections:

• An upper band of open oval mesh that allowed it to be sewn onto fabric.

• A decorative central geometric mesh.

• A deep scalloped floral border, with each scallop resembling a stylised flower or fan motif.
