So special to find a matching pair of these handmade filet lace panels.
They almost certainly were made in France during the late nineteenth or early twentieth century, approximately 1890–1920.
They are a fine example of decorative filet lace, where a knotted or woven square mesh is embroidered with linen thread to create geometric and floral motifs.
They measure approximately 16x17cm.
The quality of the stitching suggests it was made by an experienced needleworker, either professionally or as part of an advanced domestic needlework tradition.
The central motif is particularly elegant. It depicts a classical flower basket or urn, from which stylised flowers and foliage radiate. This was a very popular decorative motif during the Belle Époque, symbolising abundance, hospitality and the beauty of the garden.
Surrounding each of the baskets are:
• Floral rosettes
• Geometric quatrefoil motifs
• Delicate curling vines
• A richly ornamented border that frames the composition
