This is a set of two lovely examples of vintage French sewing thread, each representing a different period in the history of France’s renowned thread industry. They would have been everyday essentials in a French dressmaker’s workbox, yet today they are highly collectible for their typography, labels and craftsmanship.
The larger spool is labelled:
• Malliard Frères
• Lille – Paris
• 400 yards / 366 mètres
This is an original wooden spool produced by Malliard Frères, a French thread manufacturer based in Lille, the historic centre of France’s textile industry.
The smaller spool is labelled:
• Fil à Coudre (Sewing Thread)
• Rayonne
• 25 gr.
This is a later cardboard spool of rayon sewing thread, probably dating from 1945–1965.
