This is a corded guipure antique lace applique, sometimes described in France as dentelle guipure à cordonnet.
The scrolling floral motifs are characteristic of French decorative design around the turn of the twentieth century.
Several features identify it:
• A thick, raised cord outlines every motif, giving the lace a sculptural appearance.
• The open areas are filled with decorative bars and fine mesh rather than a woven fabric backing.
• The irregular outline indicates it was designed to be sewn onto another textile rather than used as edging.
It dates from approximately 1895–1925 and is in excellent condition.
During the Edwardian and Belle Époque eras, these appliqués were extremely fashionable and appeared on:
• bridal gowns
• evening dresses
• opera coats
• lingerie and tea gowns
• decorative cushions and household linens
