These are adjustable buckles rather than purely decorative shoe clips.
They were commonly used on:
• women’s shoes
• children’s shoes
• slippers
• belts
• handbags
• occasionally on dresses or aprons
The toothed centre bar grips the leather or fabric strap, allowing it to be adjusted.
These date to approximately the late 1920s - the date is able to be ascertained from the typography and layout of the B.A.C. Paris display card and the small round label reading “Nouvelles Galeries”, a famous French department store that sold haberdashery and dressmaking supplies.
They are made from antique pressed steel and finished with a glossy black japanned or enamel coating
Finding them still sewn to their original card is unusual and desirable. The card suggests they were never sold individually and have remained together for nearly a century. Collectors of French mercerie (haberdashery) often value original packaging as much as the contents 4cmx1.6cm
