We found this trio of wooden cotton reels which are approximately 5cm high in the south of France.
The labels on them read:
• DMC (Dollfus-Mieg & Cie), the famous French textile company founded in Mulhouse, Alsace.
• “Câblé 6 fils” meaning “6-ply corded thread.”
• 500 yds (500 yards).
• Thread sizes 50 and 60, indicating the thread weight.
These were quality sewing or embroidery threads sold on substantial wooden reels for home dressmaking, embroidery, lace-making, and fine needlework. DMC was one of the most respected thread manufacturers in Europe and exported worldwide.
We would estimate the date of these pieces to be approximately 1920–1926. Based on:
• The wooden spool construction.
• The Art Nouveau-inspired black and yellow labels.
• The use of French wording and imperial yardage for export markets.
