This is a lovely example of a French whitework linen handkerchief dating from approximately 1900–1926.

The handkerchief is 29cm square and is made from very fine linen and decorated with a combination of drawn-thread work, pulled-thread embroidery, and delicate white-on-white floral embroidery. The open mesh areas around the border were created by carefully withdrawing threads from the linen and then reworking the remaining threads into geometric patterns.

The geometric border with embroidered floral sprays is typical of pieces made for a young woman’s trousseau.

The untouched central square suggests it may have been intended either as a fine handkerchief or as a presentation piece where a monogram could later be added.

The workmanship is finer than ordinary everyday handkerchiefs, indicating it was likely reserved for special occasions. Similar French examples are often described as “linen drawn-thread work handkerchiefs” or “whitework hankies.”
