This is a lovely example of a mid-20th century tailor’s or dressmaker’s tape measure in its original leather pouch which is 7x5cm.
The green tape is a flexible cloth measuring tape, printed in centimetres. The word “BONUX” is visible on the tape. Bonux was a well-known French laundry detergent brand introduced in the 1950s, famous for promotional gifts included with its products.
The tape measure was likely:
• A promotional premium given away with Bonux detergent.
• Intended for household sewing, dressmaking, and knitting.
• Stored in the small leather pouch to keep it clean and prevent tangling.
The style strongly suggests:
• 1950s–1970s
• Most likely 1960s
The bright green plastic-coated tape and snap-fastened pouch are typical of that era. Earlier tape measures (pre-1940) were usually linen tapes in brass or leather cases, while later examples often used plastic retractable housings.
