The barley-twist motif was very fashionable in the late Victorian period and appears on many sewing tools, bodkins, crochet hooks, buttonhooks, and scissors of that era.
It is most likely that these originated in France (Nogent).
These were often sold as part of fitted sewing cases. The blades are longer and slightly more robust than true lace-making scissors, making them suitable for a variety of sewing tasks such as:
• Embroidery scissors.
• General needlework scissors.
This pair which is 15.5cm long are above-average quality domestic sewing scissors rather than mass-produced utilitarian examples. Features that support this:
• Decorative forged detailing rather than stamped ornament.
• Proper tension screw.
• Elegant proportions.
• Good blade length relative to handle size.
