The clues that indicate that these scissors are dated mid 1800’s are:
• Thick, hand-forged appearance.
• Riveted pivot rather than a screw.
• Broad, spear-point blades.
• Simple oval finger loops.
• Distinctive shoulders where the shanks meet the rings.
• Lack of decorative embellishment.
This is a very traditional form that predates the more elaborate Victorian and Art Nouveau sewing scissors of the late nineteenth century.
The robust forged construction is very characteristic of the cutlery traditions of Sheffield and Nogent during the nineteenth century.
These are probably not fine embroidery scissors. The broader blades suggest use for:
• General sewing and textile work.
• Household cutting tasks.
• Workbox use.
• Possibly light tailoring.
The proportions (approximately 10.5cm long) indicate a practical tool rather than a decorative sewing accessory.
