Several features suggest this pair of scissors date from mid-late 1800’s.
• Very slender forged construction.
• Long narrow blades with fine points.
• Open “waisted” shanks below the pivot.
• Small oval finger rings.
• Riveted pivot rather than a later machine screw.
• Minimal decoration, typical of practical mid- to late-Victorian work tools.
They most likely originated in either:
• England (Sheffield)
• France (Nogent).
The simple forged style and elongated proportions are strongly reminiscent of Sheffield-made embroidery scissors exported throughout Britain and the colonies during the Victorian era.
There is a letter “L” stamped on them. Single letters, partial punch marks, or retailer’s marks are not uncommon on Victorian scissors.
These would have been used for:
• Embroidery
• Needlework
• Fine sewing
• Thread trimming
Their size (approximately 9cm long) is ideal for a sewing companion or workbox.
