This listing is part of the collection we found during our March 2025 visit to Bruges.

This piece has several repeats of the motif shown in the first pic, and one end has a raw edge.

It is a large scale embroidered design made with wool and linen threads.

Measures 80 x 35cm

Lace has been commercially available since the 16th century in Belgium.

There are 4 predominant varieties from different regions:

Brussels specialised in pillow-lace with cut thread.

Antwerp was renowned for its pillow-lace with continuing thread.

Bruges became famous for its "Binche lace" especially the "point de fée" (fairy lace).

East Flanders the lace production developed as a needle technique, which was mostly used for very fine cloth and became known as "Brussels lace".
