The little repeating red “N.D.” initials inside the box are woven — not embroidered or printed — using jacquard ribbon-weaving technology. These personalized woven tapes were commonly used from the late Victorian era through the mid-20th century for:

• marking household linens,

• identifying clothing at boarding schools,

• trousseaux,

• baby clothes,

• handkerchiefs,

• and dressmaking.

The typography and packaging style suggest a date somewhere around 1910–1935.
