Vintage Whitework Linen Tray Cloth

A lovely vintage white linen tray cloth, measuring 48x37cm, probably dating from around the 1930s–50s, worked with delicate white-on-white floral embroidery and extensive drawn-thread/openwork detailing.

 The stylised daisy flowers are beautifully padded in satin stitch, giving them a raised, lustrous finish.

Particularly attractive are the four rectangular openwork motifs and the continuous drawn-thread border framing the centre. These appear to be worked by withdrawing fabric threads and securing the remaining threads with decorative needlework, rather than being applied lace. The cloth appears to be fine linen with cotton embroidery thread.
