Vintage French embroidered linen handkerchief

A beautiful fine white linen handkerchief, generously sized at approximately 34cm square, with a softly scalloped, hand-finished edge. 

The corners are decorated with delicate white-on-white floral embroidery, with the most elaborate spray in one corner featuring a large stylised flower, curling stems, leaves and tiny blossoms. The embroidery combines fine outline and satin stitches with small areas of openwork, giving the flowers wonderful texture while retaining the restrained elegance of traditional French whitework.

The asymmetrical arrangement is particularly lovely: three corners have smaller floral sprays while the fourth carries the much larger, more elaborate motif. The very fine, slightly translucent linen and accomplished embroidery suggest that this was a dress or trousseau handkerchief, rather than an everyday piece.

 It would now be beautiful incorporated into slow stitching, used as the centre of a textile piece, or simply kept intact as an example of fine domestic needlework.

Date: around 1920s–1940s, most likely 1930s. The naturalistic floral design and relatively restrained whitework feel more interwar than Victorian or Edwardian.

Very good vintage condition from the photographs, with gentle age-related handling/creasing and possibly very slight tonal variation.
