Antique Hand-Appliquéd Net Table Mat — c.1910–1930
A beautiful and unusual antique table mat, measuring 44 x 35cm, worked on a very fine cream cotton net with appliquéd linen motifs and raised corded embroidery.
The design is arranged symmetrically across the square, with four delicate trailing floral sprays of leaves, curling stems and small gathered flowers. These are surrounded by a wonderfully graphic geometric border, created from narrow strips of linen appliquéd directly onto the net.
Individual linen leaves have been cut, shaped and stitched onto the net, while the scrolling stems are formed from narrow padded or corded lengths, giving the design a subtle raised quality. Small circular flowers have been gathered and stitched around embroidered centres.
The outer edge is particularly charming, finished with a handmade interlaced or plaited linen braid, giving the otherwise delicate piece a slightly rustic quality.
There is some wear and minor damage to the net and edging, consistent with its age.
This combination of fine machine-made net with hand-applied linen decoration became popular for household textiles during the early decades of the 20th century. The stylised flowers, strong symmetry and geometric corner motifs suggest an Arts & Crafts influence, moving towards the simpler decorative styles of the 1920s.
