These are two beautiful vintage examples of French embroidered appliqués, both made in a delicate powder blue that was especially fashionable for lingerie and bridal wear during the first half of the 20th century. Although they are similar in colour, they represent two quite different styles of embroidery.

Corded floral lace motif

The is the older and more elaborate of the two. It dates to approximately 1920–1940 and combines several decorative techniques.

The design features two stylised roses framed by scrolling leaves outlined with a raised corded braid. The centres of the flowers are filled with delicate openwork machine lace, while the leaves contain decorative needle-lace fillings and tiny picot-like details.

This style was produced on Schiffli embroidery machines in France or Switzerland and was intended to imitate fine handmade lace at a price that made it accessible to fashionable dressmakers.

Satin rose motif

This motif dates from around 1940–1960.

It is embroidered on pale blue satin with fine machine stitching outlining a single rose and its leaves. Open spaces between the leaves create a light, airy appearance while the flower itself remains softly shaded with stitched detail.

Its clean, elegant lines reflect the simpler floral designs that became popular after the Second World War.
