This is a lovely example of an Australian industrial vintage linen thread on its original wooden spool, manufactured by Bond’s Industries Ltd., Sydney.

Bond’s Industries Ltd. is best known today for its underwear and hosiery, but during the first half of the 20th century the company manufactured a broad range of sewing and industrial textile products, including threads, tapes and cords. This spool is an interesting reminder of that less familiar part of the company’s history.

The thread itself is a dark charcoal or black colour.

“Linen Substitute” was a trade description widely used from the 1920s through the 1950s for a strong thread designed to replace expensive imported linen thread. Rather than being spun from flax, it was usually made from mercerised cotton or an early regenerated cellulose fibre, twisted to imitate the strength and appearance of traditional linen cord.

The wooden spool and the graphics on the label dates this thread to be from the 1930’s.
