Grain Sack

Measures 50x28cm
Such an amazing find!

Based on the weave, colours and construction, we estimate this piece dates to about 1890–1925.

It predates the widespread use of inexpensive factory-printed utility fabrics and has the appearance of cloth woven on a narrow loom, then sewn into a sack.

This is a wonderful example of a handwoven checked grain or utility sack, most likely made from linen or a linen-hemp blend, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century.
It has all the characteristics of a practical textile that would have been woven for everyday agricultural use the pattern is created by dyed warp and weft threads crossing each other, giving the cloth a rich depth of colour. The weave is fairly coarse and robust, with visible slubs and irregularities that indicate hand-spun or early mill-spun natural fibres.
The bright woven checks also made it easy for farming families to identify their own sacks when they were sent to a communal mill or market. Each region—and often each household—favoured particular colour combinations.

Textured floral

Measurement: 42x24cm

This is a very attractive printed barkcloth or textured furnishing fabric, dating to approximately the late 1940s through the 1950s. It combines a delicate floral design with a distinctive crinkled weave that was fashionable in post-war interiors and summer apparel.

Oatmeal background floral

Measurement: 28x28cm

This fabric captures the warmth and optimism of the post-war decorative arts. The combination of a woven textured ground with cheerful floral sprays reflects the movement away from the bold geometrics of the 1930s toward softer, nature-inspired interiors.
