We adore these two cotton pieces! They are bright and reflect the cheerful post-war aesthetic of French printed cottons.
Deep green floral cotton (35 × 28 cm)
This is a mid-century French printed cotton, dating from the late 1940s to early 1960s.
The rich forest-green background is scattered with informal bouquets of roses, forget-me-nots, buttercups and wildflowers. Rather than formal repeats, the flowers appear naturally dispersed, giving the fabric a fresh garden feel.
This piece has been salvaged from a curtain pelmet. The reverse is lined and we’ve left the gathered edge attached.
The has a fine plain weave with a soft handle, typical of French domestic textiles from the period.
Fruit and blossom cotton (34 × 33 cm)
This delightful print is very characteristic of 1950s French kitchen and household textiles.
The design features:
• grapes
• strawberries
• cherries
• currants
• blossoms
• abundant green foliage
Printed on a light cream ground, the lively palette of purple, crimson, yellow and green captures the optimism of post-war domestic design.
