August French Fabric Selection B

This a group of lovely examples of traditional French domestic textiles, each reflecting a different regional weaving or printing tradition. They would all be at home in a collection of vintage French household linens.

TORCHON 

This is a classic piece of French striped household linen, very likely woven for a torchon (kitchen towel) or household cloth.

The features are wonderfully French:

• creamy linen ground

• woven red decorative bands

FLORAL 

This cheerful floral is a mid-century printed cotton, from the 1940s or 1950s. The colours and simplified botanical forms are typical of post-war French textile design, when bright floral prints became popular for: aprons, curtains, summer dresses & children’s clothing. 

The print remains remarkably vibrant, suggesting it has seen little exposure to sunlight.
