Knox’s ‘Gimp’ Linen Thread.” The thread is a beautiful warm ivory\/cream with a smooth, slightly lustrous finish and a firm twist.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eW. \u0026amp; J. Knox was a well-known Scottish linen-thread manufacturer associated with Kilbirnie in Ayrshire, an important centre of the Scottish linen-thread industry. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003e“Gimp” refers here to a strong, tightly twisted linen thread rather than decorative modern gimp braid. Threads of this type were used for lace-making, crochet, embroidery, sewing and other fine needlework, depending on the particular weight.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe skein is still remarkably full.
